Crates:

Behind the passenger seat is the third crate at 27W x 41L x 31H; this is side opening. A fourth crate, also side opening, can be placed behind the driver seat.
Storage Space:
Hauling 3 dogs, no passengers, and leaving one of the second row seats in gives enough space for plenty of storage. There's room for an ice chest, dog food bins, and luggage. Things which are long and narrow (folding chair) or which can be squished can be stored between the rear crates and the windows. Tarps and other flat things can be placed on top of the crates, still retaining use of the rear view mirror.
Miscellaneous:
With a passenger and 4 dogs, storage space is less. For road trips, a small U-Haul trailer or a roof carrier extends the packable area. The useable interior width of the Montana is 48 inches in the rear and 58 inches in the center.
