I started Nemo on a raw diet about 8 months ago because he was having horrible hot spots. The vet kept putting him on different levels of prednizone and kept telling me to put him back on Pedigree dog food. I tried all different brands of dog foods, and finally said there has to be a better way. I had talked to Tiffany on another list and she suggested a raw diet. I thought, it couldn't hurt! Wow! wonders of wonders, after he detoxed out, no more skin problems! Brandy was a rescued GSD that came to live with us. She has been with us for about 6 months. Her previous owner had been feeding her a cheap generic brand of dog food. Her coat was very dry and brittle and not a good shade of black. She went cold turkey to raw the day she came to us. It seemed like it took forever for her to detox. Now her coat is shiney, sleek and a wonderful shade of black and tan.
When I first started the dogs on raw, I went strictly Billinghurst. Nemo lost close to 10 lbs. He wasn't fat to start with and all his ribs were showing. So after a lot of experimenting this is how we are feeding now.
Nemo's diet:
Most mornings, 1 lb. of satin balls (I make two batches of this. One the reg. way and one with mixed, lightly steamed veggies. They are alternated.).
Brandy's Diet: Most mornings. 1/2 lb of satin balls.
Once a week they get about 1 lb. of mixed organ meats, mixed with 3 eggs and a clove of garlic.
And also about once a week they get 2 eggs, 1 cup of milk, 2 tsp. of oil, a tsp. of honey and a pinch of salt, and about 1/4 cup of grated raw carrots and some kind of green leafy veggie (I also through in a handful or two of oat meal once in a while). And about once a month I mix in one can of sardines.
With all of the above, they get 3 scoops of Healthy Champ High Potency Nutritional Supplement and 1 400IU of vit. E. and 1 crushed clove of garlic and about 1 tsp. of organic ACV.
PM.
Nemo gets 1/2 a whole chicken, or 2 chicken leg quarter parts or a 1/2 a turkey back, or about 2-3 lbs. of other meat and bone that is cheap. Mostly it is chicken.
Brandy gets a chicken back or 3-4 wings, or 1 turkey neck, or about 1/2 to 1 lb. of what ever meat/bone is cheap.
Both dogs are only fasted one meal once a week. If They go longer, they start puking all over the place. They prefer chicken over turkey. And they thought it was a special treat when they got lamb one night.
Nemo is a 18 month old black and silver long hair GSD. He is weighing about 95 lbs. now and he still looks gaunt.
Brandy is a 6 year old black and tan long hair GSD. As you can tell from her diet, she is on a diet to loose weight. She is weighing around 70 lbs. and should be around 60-65 lbs.
